Okay, but self driving cars are here. And the hype behind computerization diminishing paper's grip on the business environment in the wayback has pretty much proven to be just that; hype. I posit many magnitudes of effort more have gone into relational data bases, algorithms, and now AI driven whatevers than ever went into drivers ed, driving, shoebox-and-card data retrieval systems, tickle files or customer services driven by organic intelligence.
Is it a good thing?
All I can see are circular logic telephone trees, the DMV, Robo-calls, billing systems so tightly wound they are incapable of self correction, and the burgeoning novel security industry that exists solely to profit from fear of digital thievery. So, I am not yet convinced this particular branch of tech evolution is all that as the hype would have us believe. Besides I am not all that keen to share the road with first generation AI drivers; they are not yet aware of their own limitations and as such are more dangerous than the very young and inexperienced and the very old regardless of their experience.
That's how I see it.
It seems to me the unintended consequences of this line of technology are beginning to seriously overshadow any good it provides. Likely as much a result of the human propensity to fuss with everything and to endlessly create bells and whistles to justify their status and paychecks rather than expend any serious energy towards coming up with actually better mousetraps. Though some, too few, are working feverishly towards said mousetraps in an effort to get a shot at grabbing the gold ring if for no other reason. Even fewer because they are called to do so, ring or no ring. Sing praises on high for the practical altruists and those driven by calling; mankind's truest heroes.
